11002002385While people across the country are rightly concerned about the continued recession and job cuts, some government data illustrate why it is so worthwhile to earn a college degree. The Bureau of Labor Statistics tells us that in May (the most recent month available), the national unemployment rate was 10 percent for adults age 25 or older with only a high school diploma. But the rate dropped to 7.7 percent for those with an associate degree, and to 4.8 percent for people who have earned a bachelor’s degree. So, while a degree won’t guarantee a college grad will never be laid off in his or her lifetime, the degree increases the chances of staying employed.
